Welcome to the Weekly Gaucho Podcast episode 19, where we’re going to be talking about the video game franchise, The Last of Us.
The Last of Us is an action-adventure game series developed by Naughty Dog. This game series is a Playstation exclusive, meaning that it can only be played on Playstation consoles. The Last of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where humans have turned into infected zombies due to the cordyceps virus. The virus began in 2013 where we meet the game’s main protagonist, Joel Miller, in Austin, Texas. Joel had a daughter named Sarah, who gave Joel a watch for his birthday just hours before the outbreak began. Unfortunately, Sarah did not make it through the night as she was shot and killed by a U.S. soldier in the midst of all the panic. The game then jumps 20 years into the future, where Joel is seen residing in a quarantine zone in Boston.
While on a mission to get guns, Joel runs into Marlene, a member of the Fireflies, a group of people who set out to find a cure for the virus. Marlene tells Joel that she needs his help smuggling a 13 year old girl, Ellie, across America to Salt Lake City. Joel reluctantly agrees, as he then finds out Ellie is immune to the virus. It is revealed that Ellie was bitten by one of the infected a few months ago and still hasn’t shown any signs of infection. Joel and Ellie undergo a great journey across America, facing countless groups of raiders, the loss of a few new friends, and even dismantling a group of cannibals. Once they finally arrive at Salt Lake City, Joel and Ellie find the Fireflies and take Ellie away for some tests. Joel runs back into Marlene and she tells him that in order to make the cure, they would have to remove Ellie’s brain from her body. Joel is mortified from hearing this and rushes to get to Ellie, killing anyone who got in his way, including Marlene.
This only concludes the events of the first game. Listen to the full episode to find out what happens next to Joel and Ellie.
